Membership Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Enjoy discounts on tickets, food and drink, and other items, as well as free parking and other great benefits!
Our theatre operates with a Membership system rather than Season Subscriptions. This model has worked so well for us since we made the move 10+ years ago from Shakespeare Santa Cruz and the Glen at UCSC to Santa Cruz Shakespeare at the Audrey Stanley Grove in DeLaveaga Park. This would not have been possible without AMAZING community support. We consider donors as SCS family members, and the Membership system was devised to reflect our gratitude through specialized annual benefits and acknowledgment! Simply put, it allows you to get the very most from your SCS theatre experience.
Membership donations make up the majority of our annual contributed income. These gifts are tax-deductible to the fullest extent allowed by law. They are rewarded with a system of non-transferable benefits that have non-tangible value. Membership donations are unrestricted (unlike Capital, Education, or other restricted funds) and are used for a multitude of needs including, but not limited to, professional staff and artists, education, venues, services, materials, marketing, etc. We truly could not operate without Member generosity.
Your 12-month Membership begins on your date of giving (although the computer system sometimes takes a couple of days to reflect giving with an automatic Membership flag). Your Box Office or Development representative will be able to see you’ve given and apply your benefits right away. 12-month duration means if you give on December 31, 2025, for example, the Membership will be active until December 31, 2026 and cover ALL shows in that time period. If you gave on August 1, 2025, your Membership is active through August 1, 2026, so you would definitely want to renew in August, 2026 to avoid Benefits lapsing for the rest of the 2026 Season!
If you have chosen a cumulative monthly Membership (a fixed amount per month to achieve an annual total giving), then your Membership should renew automatically (with notice), but it is still Annual, based on the first month of giving. Monthly memberships that are canceled or lapsed are accorded benefits that correlate with the total monthly donations made up to the date of cancellation or lapse, but not necessarily the originally designated amount, should the final total be less than planned.
Renew annually, based on when you gave or your first month of giving.
Renew annually, based on when you gave or your first month of giving.
SCS sends several mailings (one by hardcopy, others may be email) per calendar year to Members to provide benefit information and remind Members to make sure they have renewed before the new Season starts. We encourage end-of-year generosity via a hardcopy mailing. We’ll remind Members about renewal with a mailing in the early spring and include a hardcopy brochure of benefits (handy for the front of your fridge) as well as a remittance envelope.
These are mailings to ALL our Members. They’re a reminder, but don’t necessarily indicate your Membership has lapsed OR that it is going to be current through all of the upcoming productions. At present, our system does not allow us to send a reminder to each individual that their Membership is up for renewal. This is something we plan on improving in 2026 with a brand new software system! Right now, we advise you make a calendar note of the month you joined, consult the email or hardcopy letter you received post donation—or you can (during Box Office hours listed on the website) contact the Box Office or (throughout the year) Development personnel to check your status/inquire when to renew.
Yes, to the fullest extent allowable by law! Please consult your tax preparer for further information.
Every time you donate to SCS, either to Membership or a Campaign, you receive an acknowledgement via email. These emails are sent per donation and are fully legal as formal proof of your donation for tax purposes. For Membership donations over $500, you receive a hardcopy letter per donation, signed by either our Managing Director or Artistic Director. We strive to individually acknowledge gifts of all levels. As a Certified Green Business, some levels of giving may be acknowledged via email due to volume. All cumulative annual giving will be acknowledged in January of the following calendar year for tax purposes. Allow a little time for your letter to arrive, as we produce these by hand, but if you feel you are missing a letter that you need, feel free to reach out to rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org and we’ll send you a copy as soon as possible! Other acknowledgements beyond those of record vary by level of giving and time for year (see Benefits).
SCS’ Tax ID # is 46-4635444. Our legal name is Shakespeare Play On. We do business as Santa Cruz Shakespeare. Checks may be made out to either name.
Membership giving is generally credited to the signer of the donor check or the name of the online account used for giving, unless SCS received formal instruction per gift to do otherwise. In some cases, based on your giving history, you may have a separate account from your spouse. The good news is that we are happy to combine these individual multiple accounts into a Household Account, which (again, based on giving histories) may give you a higher Membership level. Household accounts and the Membership Benefits apply exclusively to people with whom you reside. We are so happy to welcome your friends and neighbors and appreciate you suggesting they become Members, as well!
If questions arise about your Membership account (ticket orders, levels, histories, etc.), ask if someone in your household may have a separate account. Your account can be merged with that of anyone in your household by SCS staff! At this time, only one email is able to be listed as the contact email for a combined account.
Membership donations may be made by phone to the theatre office ((831) 460-6396, select the extension for the Development Director, leave a message for callback) or Box Office (in Season, (831) 460-6399, leave a message for callback. You can respond to one of our hardcopy mailings at any time by using the remittance envelope provided. You can email rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org or boxoffice@santacruzshakespeare.org. You can also give securely online at www.santacruzshakespeare.org/member! Please direct mailed checks or money orders to 501 Upper Park Road Santa Cruz, CA 95065, Attn: Rachel Lee Rogers
Membership giving—whether by cash, check, money order, credit card, stock, match from an employer, IRA, in-kind donation, or other—must be designated for Membership and is separate from specific Campaign/Fund giving. If you don’t include a designation, we’ll use our best judgment as to your intentions, trying to make the decision that gives you the most benefit!
You can personally access your benefits, as can anyone whose information is formally listed as part of your household. You can include guests (up to 10 tickets total) in a ticket order that you place for a show you plan on attending. If you, the account holder, are not present, then your guests are not able to claim benefits such as seat cushions, wine, or additional discounts on food, drink, or merchandise.
SCS currently offers Memberships from $50 (a $25 special Membership is available for those under 25 y/o) to $25,000 and beyond. The levels are categorized by the following names with Benefits increasing by level: Friend ($50-124), Patron ($125-249), Player ($250-499), Ensemble ($500-999). Upper level Members are collectively known as the Producers’ Circle, which includes Director ($1,000-2,499), Associate Producer ($2,500-4,999), Producer ($5,000-9,999), and Executive Producer ($10,000-24,999). At $25,000 and above, you’re a Benefactor, a Muse of Fire, a category all its own!
Our secure online portal (www.santacruzshakespeare.org/member) allows you to choose any of the Membership Levels above or choose your own one-time amount. These gifts do not renew automatically. Our current system does allow you to make a recurring monthly payment at the Membership levels of Director, Associate Producer, or Producer and charge your account automatically every month, apportioned over the year. Memberships are annual based on the first month of your giving.
Consult www.santacruzshakespeare.org/member for a handy chart that delineates all levels and their Benefits. Physical Membership Brochures that include the Benefit chart are ‘snail-mailed’ to ALL Members once a year. You can also request a copy of the Benefits Chart by emailing rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org or pick up a copy at any SCS show or event.
Check your level on the chart to see which benefits apply to you. The benefits may include, but are not limited to:
- Advance Access to Tickets (All Members)

If you have a question about your Benefits, please contact Development staff (rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org) or the Box Office (in Season, boxoffice@santacruzshakespeare.org).
A physical Membership Card (new to Season 2025) is the fastest way for you to access your Benefits at the Grove. Simply flash it for your Early Admission to the house, discounts on Food and Drink, discounts on Merchandise, certain Parking Perks, etc. Staff can look you up in the system to check your Member status, but a card makes it much quicker and easier for all! There are currently five colors of Member cards based on levels—four for regular Members and one for all Producers’ Circle Members. You can pick your card up at the Box Office.
Members enjoy earlier access to tickets than the general public. Public sales begin May 1st via phone, (831) 460-6399, and email, boxoffice@santacruzshakespeare.org, and online at www.santacruzshakespeare.org/tickets. Box Office Hours are Tuesday-Friday, 12-4pm and two hours before any scheduled show time. Sales for ALL Members begins April 1st through the Box Office and online. Concierge Service is reserved for Producers’ Circle Members at the Producer ($5,000) level and above. Concierge Service begins March 15. During Concierge Service, a staff member personally contacts all Producer and higher level Members by phone—or failing to reach by phone, by email. The staff member is available during Concierge Service to book tickets, arrange for picnic table reservations, take wine bottle orders, send parking passes, provide event information, and answer any questions the Member may have. After tickets go on sale to the public May 1st, all ticket ordering and Benefits arrangements are made by the Member through the Box Office directly.
Concierge Service is ticket and benefit service reserved for Producers’ Circle Members at the Producer ($5,000) level and above. Concierge Service begins March 15. During primary Concierge Service (generally a two week period), a staff member personally contacts all Producer and higher level Members by phone—or failing to reach by phone, by email. A staff member will reach out to you in this two week period as quickly as possible. Calling Concierge directly is not necessary.
Early Admission is enjoyed by ALL Members of SCS and refers to the time at which you may enter the House and access your seats. Everyone, regardless of Membership, may park and enter the theatre gates two hours before show time. Members can have their tickets (printed or on a device) scanned at the two house entrances one hour before show time. Remember to have your Membership Card handy! This is a new way to identify yourself as a Member at locations around the Grove, including at entrance. If you haven’t picked up your card already, it may be obtained at the Box Office up to two hours before any scheduled performance. Non-members are allowed entrance at 45 minutes to show time. Early admission is especially nice in order to be able to leisurely take your seats with plenty of time to spare—and to have first pick of the Groundling areas, if you enjoy those seats!
Playbill Acknowledgement Policy for the 2025 Season included all Members from the Player Level ($250) and up in the physical, printed Playbill. Members below this level were acknowledged via a link in the Playbill to a dedicated webpage at www.santacruzshakespeare.org/thankyou.
This policy may change in the future as our Membership numbers grow. SCS makes every attempt to honor the Recognition Name you provided at the time your account was created. If you’d like to make a change to how you are recognized, we’re happy to make the adjustment in the following Season’s Playbill.
All Members are entitled to no-fee ticket exchanges, which for non-members are $10 per ticket for 2026 shows (an increase to past fee, but well below other similar theatres in the Bay Area). As a Member, you can swap your tickets for any date, any available tickets. If the new tickets cost more than your original tickets, you will be charged the difference. Ticket exchanges are based on availability. No refunds are possible. However, we gratefully receive the donation of tickets you aren’t able to enjoy and make sure they help another member of our community see a show!
To exchange Member tickets, contact the Box Office at (831) 460-6399 or boxoffice@santacruzshakespeare.org.
All Members receive Artistic Director Charles Pasternak’s monthly newsletter, Dispatch from the Grove! Written by Charles, the newsletter gives all the latest that’s going on at the theatre in any given month, including shows and artistic projects, educational offerings, events, fundraising efforts, volunteer opportunities, etc. The Dispatch arrives by email to the primary account holder address listed for the Member (unfortunately, we are currently unable to include multiple emails on Household accounts).
All Members receive Ticket Discounts with Producers’ Circle Members receiving 10% off and all other Members receiving 5% off. If you order through the secure online portal, make sure you’re logged into your account (click the person icon on the nav bar – upper right corner). Select the tickets you wish to purchase. Please note that your Member discount will populate at the END OF YOUR ORDER—much like the total discount that reflects at the end of a grocery store order. Only one discount can be applied to an order, so if you choose another discount such as Senior, the Member discount will not apply. The Member discount is generally better and recommended to use. If you’re ordering during Concierge Service, the staff member helping you will make sure your discount applies. If you’re ordering through the Box Office by phone or email or in person, identify yourself as a Member and make sure you are using the name under which you originally registered for the account. You can use your Member Ticket Discount as many times as you would like throughout the Season for you and your household. You can apply the Member Ticket Discount to up to 10 guests per performance, but you should be in attendance with your guests. For larger groups, speak with the Box Office regarding Group Rates! Hathaway Club Members receive 3 discounted tickets per Season.
You can check if your Membership level entitles you to any given benefit by consulting the Benefits Chart found at www.santacruzshakespeare.org/member and mailed directly to you each year your Membership is active. You can also ask your Concierge Service staff member during your call with them (Producers and above).
If you’d like to check the status of a Benefit (check if you have remaining picnic table reservations or bottles of wine, for example), please call (831) 460-6399 or email boxoffice@santacruzshakespeare.org during the Season or email Development at rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org any time! You can also inquire at the Box Office before any show or at intermission. We’re working to implement new CRM software in 2026 that will enable Members to view their Benefits any time online—stand by for the announcement of this handy service!
While we aren’t allowed to offer Members free tickets as a Benefit for a tax-deductible donation, we DO offer Ticket Vouchers (a brand new Benefit begun in 2025) to our upper level Producers’ Circle Members who are Producers (Two Ticket Vouchers) or Executive Producers (Four Ticket Vouchers). Ticket Vouchers function like free tickets, except they are non-transferable and must be used by the Member/Household. You can use your Ticket Vouchers for any available seats at any show. You do not receive a physical Ticket Voucher, and Ticket Vouchers cannot be booked by the Member through the online portal. Rather, your Concierge Service staff Member will ask you in your Concierge Call when you would like to use your Ticket Vouchers. They will apply the Vouchers and you won’t be charged anything for those seats! If you haven’t decided when to use your Ticket Vouchers at the time of Concierge Service, that’s ok! You can still book those tickets at any time by contacting the Box Office by phone, (831) 460-6399, or email, boxoffice@santacruzshakespeare.org, or contacting Development staff by email at rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org. Vouchers must be used each Season, as they do not roll over to the following Season.
Friends ($50-124) and Patrons ($125-249) receive 5% off all food and beverages (including alcohol), and higher level Members receive 10% off at both Line 38, our in-house restaurant located at the rear of the Box Office, and The Bar, located at the right of the entrance to the ‘lobby’ area. Remember to flash your Membership Card to receive your discount. Don’t have your Membership Card yet? Visit the nearby Box Office window to pick it up!
Many Producers’ Circle Members receive one or more complimentary bottles of wine per Season. These are fantastic, local wines from our area vintners and rotate regularly! Producers and above may reserve their bottle(s) of wine during Concierge Service or other ticket ordering, and anyone entitled to complimentary wine may reserve bottles by contacting the Box Office by phone, (831) 460-6399 or email, boxoffice@santacruzshakespeare.org. Simply let your staff member know at which performance you’d like to enjoy the wine.
Members are welcome to select red or white wine based on availability. Two souvenir wine glasses and a small corkscrew (for corked bottles) are provided per bottle while supplies last. Eligible Members may also walk up to the Box Office window on the day of the performance to request wine. Reserved wine and requested wine is kept at the Box Office for pickup to ensure the white option stays well chilled and that Members receive glasses and a corkscrew (for corked bottles). Wine bottles may be enjoyed throughout the theatre—in the House (at your seats), Beer Garden, Picnic Area, or ‘lobby’ area, but not in the Parking Areas. If unopened, Members are welcome to take wine bottles home, but opened containers must be consumed on premises. The wine bottles should be utilized each Season and do not roll over.

All members are eligible for discounts on SCS Merchandise with Friend level Members qualifying for 5% off and all other Member levels qualifying for 10% off ticketed prices on all items including Clearance, but excluding chair and cushion rentals. Show your Membership Card (if you don’t have it yet, pick up yours at Box Office) to receive your discount. The Gift Shop is located in a tent alongside the Box Office building. As of 2025, the Gift shop can only receive credit card payments. Coming soon: an online shop of SCS branded items and Shakespeare-themed gifts!
Members of the Producers’ Circle levels (Director, Associate Producer, Producer, Executive Producer) do receive free seat cushions for themselves and the guests for whom they purchased tickets at all performances they attend! The cushions are placed at your seats pre-show by our hardworking front of house staff. If, for any reason, those seats were not pre-set with cushions, simply let a staff member know or visit the Gift Shop/Merchandise tent to pick up your free cushions. Having your Membership card available speeds your pick up!
Members not of the Producers’ Circle can rent cushions from the Gift Shop/Merchandise tent for $5 each. Cushions have a bottom and a back and are designed both for the seats and the Groundling area (they provide some back support via straps between the bottom and back). Low chairs may also be rented ($6 each) for use in the Groundling section, but are permitted only in the side sections due to sight lines. Blankets, previously available to rent, are now very reasonably priced for purchase at the Gift Shop and bear the SCS logo, making them a nice souvenir! (Cushion and chair rentals were previously made at the Soroptomist Hut adjacent to the parking lot, but are now available only at the Gift Shop located alongside the Box Office).
All Producers’ Circle Members (Directors, Associate Producers, Producers, and Executive Producers) are invited to the Season Announcement Event that takes place late in the Season, usually the last week of August at the Grove. Invitations go out via Evite several weeks before and you’re encouraged to RSVP. Wine, non-alcoholic beverages, and snack type foods are free and available at Line 38 (rear of the Box Office). This is a chance to mix and mingle with your fellow Producers’ Circle Members, SCS staff, and many artists from the Season’s company. Live music plays before and after all the exciting Announcements! This is your chance to be the first to hear Artistic Director Charles Pasternak announce the production titles for next Season and the theme that ties these shows together. When possible, some early casting announcements may be made. Also hear words from Managing Director Lorne Dechtenberg and Board President Frost. The Billy award is presented here annually to honor one of our remarkable volunteers!
A beloved tradition for SCS, Behind the Scenes is a party that opens the doors of our rehearsal spaces and design shops to all Producers’ Circle Members. As this event is indoors at the Pacific Collegiate School in Santa Cruz, space is limited, but in 2026 we’re delighted to again extend the invitation to ALL PC Members—Directors, Associate Producers, Producers, and Executive Producers!
Held in the last week of June when our production processes are well under way, this is a chance to see where the magic happens. You get a tour led personally by the Artistic Director, Managing Director, Board President, or Production Manager. The event is beautifully catered with food and fine wine. Major theatre news is typically announced before we all enjoy a scene and/or song from the upcoming productions and a question-and-answer talk with the artists!
We’re delighted to give a Season Poster to all Associate Producer, Producer, and Executive Producer level Members of the Producers’ Circle. Your poster will be mailed to you at the end of the Season (or you can pick it up at the Gift Shop during the Season beginning in 2026). Executive Producers’ posters are autographed by the Season’s Company!
The following Producers’ Circle level Members enjoy the opportunity to reserve a Picnic Table in our Boyle Picnic Glen (named for Rick & Violet Boyle): Associate Producers (at 1 show), Producers (at 2 shows), and Executive Producers (at 3 shows). Producers and Executive Producers can make their reservations during their Concierge Service call. Associate Producers, Producers, and Executive Producers can all make table reservations at any time after April 1st through the Box Office at (831) 460-6399 or boxoffice@santacruzshakespeare.org. Table reservations are first come, first served, but we can usually accommodate your requested day(s). You’ll receive an email confirmation of your booking. Before the SCS gates open for your performance, SCS staff places a reserved sign at each reserved table.
The Boyle Picnic Glen is located to the left of the gravel parking lot and marked with a sign. The view from the bluff of the bay is unparalleled! The tables comfortably seat 6-8 people. You’re welcome to bring your own Picnic or stroll down to Line 38 and procure a feast for your table! Alcohol is permitted—if you’ve chosen to utilize a Wine Benefit, don’t forget to pick up your bottle, glasses, and corkscrew (for corked bottles) from the Box Office window!
A shoutout from the stage by Artistic Director Charles Pasternak is a coveted benefit of Membership! These gratitudes take place during the Curtain Speech before the top of the show.
- Each production of the summer repertory season as well as the fall productions (two fall productions are scheduled for 2026!) are individually assigned a Production Sponsor from our group of Executive Producers, based on giving. These Production Sponsors are hailed in each curtain speech for the entire run of their production. (Beginning in 2026, SCS may have multiple Production Sponsors per production to ensure our growing number of Executive Producers is well recognized).
- Each individual performance of a production is assigned a Performance Sponsor from our group of Producer level Members. The individual Performance Sponsor is thanked at one curtain speech over the course of the summer. Using attendance manifests, SCS does everything in our power to make sure each Producer is thanked on a night for which they have ordered tickets and will be in personal attendance. Whenever possible, we’re very happy to accommodate special requests for the performance on which you’d like to be thanked, although we cannot guarantee any given performance. Starting 2026, your concierge will work with you about your date during your call with them.
- Associate Producer Level Members (one of our most popular and largest Member groups) will now be thanked from the stage communally on several special evenings to be announced before the Season’s start.
Yes! SCS is delighted to welcome Producer and Executive Level Members to certain rehearsals!
- It’s a popular tradition to attend a Technical Rehearsal with a guest. These Technical Rehearsals generally take place a week before the show opens. Invitation comes to the email you provided when you set up your account with SCS. This is a great chance to see the magic of theatre as it is being crafted—and, therefore, there is a chance the show may pause as artists and designers add elements to the production!
- New in 2025, SCS Artistic Director Charles Pasternak opened the First Table Reads to Producer and Executive Producer Members! This is a very rare treat to be in the room with actors, designers, artists, staff, and board members as we all hear the words of the play for the very first time, see designs, listen to dramaturgs, etc. You’re welcome to bring a guest, but we do ask that everyone remains ‘a fly on the wall’ while the work is done. These readings are typically the second week in June, and invitations go out at least a week beforehand whenever possible.
We’re happy to give Backstage Tours to Executive Producer Members! Please arrange your tour by reaching out to your Development Director, Rachel Lee Rogers, at rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org. Please allow 2-3 days for scheduling. We conduct backstage tours one hour before the show begins. Tours are conducted by Artistic Director Charles Pasternak or Production Manager Alicia Gibson, based on availability. We’re excited to show you around our new Artistic Complex, still in its final stages of work before being fully occupied. Depending on the production playing on the day your tour takes place, you may get to sit in on a dance or fight call in the house!
Starting in 2025, in-Season tours became available to Members not yet at the Executive Producer level via auctions separate from Membership benefits. Keep your eye out for various Silent Auction opportunities throughout the year at which we offer for bid the Backstage Experiences for each show in the upcoming Season! These Experiences include a personal backstage tour, a seat at Fight Call, and even the opportunity to watch the production from the Tech Booth and hear the Stage Manager call the show!
When a show is not currently in season, we’re still happy to give a tour of the Grove to any Member based on staff availability. Just drop an email to rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org.
And we want to talk to you! On ANY show day, come visit The Welcome Table, located just inside the ‘lobby’ entrance. It has a large green umbrella over it. It is staffed by our Development Director, Rachel Lee Rogers, or a Development Committee member, or a Board Member. We can direct you to where within the Grove you can utilize your Benefits, as well as answer a myriad of other questions about SCS and the Audrey Stanley Grove. Stop by and chat with us an hour before the beginning of any show.
The Box Office is also available to answer Membership questions and process ticket orders either in person two hours before the beginning of any show or Tues-Friday 12-4pm from May through the end of the Season in September.
If your topic can’t be addressed by Box Office, a senior staff member is almost always available to talk to you at the Grove - just ask a staff member!
Outside performance days, please contact Rachel Lee Rogers at rachel@santacruzshakespeare.org or call (831) 460-6396 and follow the extension for Development.
