Santa Cruz Shakespeare has thoroughly reviewed local, regional, state policies and the recommendations of the CDC in regard to keeping the theatre experience safe during the ongoing pandemic. The following policies reflect that and are subject to change as we continue to navigate any developments.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has posted that Santa Cruz County Covid hospitalizations have reached a point where we are currently at "Yellow Level" for Covid transmission. With this information, SCS encourages the wearing of masks. While we make no formal requirements at this time, we ask all who enjoy the SCS space and programming to do all they can to keep everyone safe. Thank you!

  • Even though SCS performs in an outdoor setting, masks are encouraged, but not required, for audience members, including seating areas, restrooms and food and wine concessions.
  • If an audience member is exhibiting any Covid symptoms that mimic seasonal allergy symptoms, that audience member may be asked to wear a mask while enjoying the show. If you do not have a mask, House Management will provide one for you.
  • If a ticket holder is not feeling well, we encourage you to stay home.
  • Due to union guidelines related to Covid, patrons will not be able to interact with the actors backstage or after the show.

If you have purchased tickets on behalf of other individuals, please share this important information with them.

This season enjoy some tasty pre-show picnic opportunities through our new partnership with The Grille at DeLaveaga Golf Course!  You can now pre-order tasty meals to enjoy in the theatre or in our Boyle Family Picnic Grove on the bluffs overlooking Monterey Bay before the show from Wednesdays through Sundays.

Use this link to place your order with The Grille at DeLaveaga (at least 24 hours before the show you are attending – the earlier the better) and you will be able to pick up your selections at the concessions window (behind the Box Office) at The Grove when you arrive.

As always, you are welcome to bring your own refreshments with you to enjoy in the Picnic Grove or the theater. We do work with a rotating series of food vendors and food trucks offering a wide array of refreshments on various dates throughout the season.  We cannot guarantee there will be onsite food options at every performance so please plan accordingly. Check our social media for updates on the schedule of food vendors for your performance.

SANTA CRUZ SHAKESPEARE LIVE AUDIENCE POLICIES

Are there concessions?

Our wine bar will be open every performance offering local beer, wine, and cocktails.

We are thrilled to be able to offer you advance ordering for your pre-show picnic or dinner.  This year we have partnered with The Grille at DeLaveaga to provide a variety of options for you.  Use this link to The Grille at DeLaveaga to place your order (at least 24 hours before the show you are attending – the earlier the better) and you will be able to pick up your selections at our concessions window at The Grove when you arrive. This service is available for the shows Wednesdays through Sundays.

We are also planning to have local Food Trucks and food vendors to bring you tasty bites throughout the Season*.

Check out our social media platforms for the latest news on concessions at The Grove!

*We cannot guarantee concessions at every performance.

When should I arrive?

The gate to the The Grove venue opens 90 minutes prior to show time, this allows access to parking & picnic areas, wine bar, and concessions partners.

Members receive early entry to the theatre beginning one hour prior to curtain.  Please follow the signs for member entry. General seating in the theatre will begin 30 minutes prior to curtain.

What’s the parking like?

Parking at The Grove couldn’t be easier! Our accessible lot is directly adjacent to our new home. Due to the limited parking availability at The Grove, the SC Shakespeare “Sort by Size” Parking system maximizes the number of cars parked with no car blocked in.  This parking system takes a bit longer to get cars parked but, after the show all cars leave within 10-15 minutes! Come early to avoid the longest lines.

Parking fee is $5 per car (cash only please).  It is highly recommended to carpool (4+ per car) for free parking! You can also pre-order your parking pass with your ticket order online. There are a number handicapped designated parking spaces as well as a drop-off zone.

What is groundling seating?

For 2022 we plan to return to our open groundling seating plan. You may wish to arrive early to line up in advance for a groundling spot. If you are seated in the center groundling blanket area, please bring your own blanket/rug to sit on; no low beach chairs may be used in this area. If you are seated in a side groundling box, low beach chairs will be available for rental. Please do not bring your own beach chairs to the theater.

The history of “Groundling” is very interesting.  Coined during Shakespeare’s time, “Groundling” refers to people who paid one penny in order to be able to stand in front of the stage to watch the play.

Groundlings were known to be raucous and even throw food at characters they didn’t like. While we don’t encourage that sort of behavior, we do think being a Groundling is a fun way to watch Shakespeare!

Do you have assisted listening devices?

Yes! They’re available for rental free of charge. Please check with the box office upon your arrival to reserve a unit for the performance.

Can children come?

Children age 6 and above are welcome to attend our performances; no children under age 6 please except at our All Ages Matinees (see the next FAQ). While SCS’s summer festival plays are not specifically geared towards children, we do strive to be a theatre that welcomes younger audiences. The plays generally run between two and three hours in length, and you are the best judge of your children’s ability to enjoy each play.

What are the “All Ages Matinees”?

This year, we are offering three 2:00 pm Saturday matinees for patrons who wish to bring any family member of any age.

  • Twelfth Night on July 23rd
  • The Formula on July 30th, and
  • The Tempest on August 13th.

All patrons, regardless of age, need a ticket. However, do note that we do not change artistic content for these productions. You are the best judge of what is appropriate for your children and use your discretion.

Can I rent seat cushions, chairs, and blankets?

We plan to return to our rental policies for blankets, cushions, and chairs.  We partner with the Soroptimists of Capitola who use proceeds from these rentals to provide scholarships for young women.  Rental costs for 2022 will be $4.00 per item.

We will comply with any guidelines from the state and/or county regarding these items.  More details will be available as we approach the season.

If you tend to get cold in the evening, we suggest you bring appropriate outer wear or your own blanket.  Remember to take it with you when go home!
