Education Partners of Santa Cruz Shakespeare support and expand our community by providing opportunities to learn about Shakespeare, theatre, and the importance of the performing arts. The Saturday Shakespeare Group holds three 5-week sessions per year. Each session focuses on an in-depth study and discussion of single play over five consecutive Saturdays. The first four weeks include lectures, presentations and group readings. Presenting speakers are often associated with UCSC or Santa Cruz Shakespeare, but some are distinguished scholars from further afield. On the fifth Saturday of each session, the group watches a recorded professional production of the play and shares potluck refreshments.
Meetings are held at the New Aptos Library, 7695 Soquel Dr, Aptos, at 10:00 a.m. on Saturdays. Meeting are simulcast via Zoom. UCSC professor of literature Sean Keilen established Shakespeare Workshop as a research center of The Humanities Institute at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2013. The Shakespeare Workshop builds on a tradition that began in 1981 when Audrey Stanley founded Shakespeare Santa Cruz, extending an open invitation to members of the public to discuss topics of fundamental human concern, using Shakespeare’s works as a common vocabulary.
Each year Santa Cruz Shakespeare, UCSC's Shakespeare Workshop and The Humanities Institute at UCSC partner to present Weekend with Shakespeare; a full weekend of lectures, discussions and hands-on activities in which participants can learn more about each play during the day before seeing a live performance the same evening.
The 2025 event was held on August 16th and 17th and included A Midsummer Night's Dream and Pericles.
